Bahrain is divided into four governorates, also known as muhafazah in Arabic. Each governorate has its own administrative and governance structure. Prior to September 2014, Bahrain was divided into five governorates: Capital, Muharraq, Northern, Southern, and Central. However, in September 2014, the Central Governorate was abolished, and its territory was merged with the Capital Governorate.
